The Issue: The home of the Hopewell Vikings, Tony Dorsett Stadium, is named after the NFL Hall of Fame running back and Heisman Trophy winner who once played there. Having served as the home of the Vikings for many years, the stadium was due for a renovation to give the players a field worthy of their efforts.
The Job: The entire stadium received a $5 million renovation and SCG, due to its strong reputation in building championship-caliber fields, was contracted to install the new turf.
At 48 ounces, Trophy Turf was selected for the field’s carpet due to its durability, which will live up to the Vikings standards. The turf installation had to be carefully coordinated around the other work that was taking place at the stadium and was completed just a few weeks before the Vikings kicked off their season.

The Results: Hopewell players were anxious to open the season at the new Tony Dorsett Stadium with a victory. Their worries quickly dissipated in the opening minutes when they burst into the new blue-carpeted end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run. They went on to a 47-22 win over Mars. According to the Beaver County Times, the stadium and its new carpet garnered “rave reviews” with one player calling it “the most beautiful stadium I’ve ever played in.”
“The workmanship, everything, was top notch. I knew that if SCG could build facilities for the professionals, then they could handle our field without a hitch,” said Athletic Director Don Short. “In fact, we’ve had other schools looking at the field and they’ve been quite impressed.”
